Sri Lanka's Best Snorkelling Destination
Pigeon Island National Park lies just 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli on Sri Lanka's east coast, making it one of the most accessible marine parks in the country. The park protects two small rocky islands surrounded by some of the healthiest coral reefs in Sri Lanka. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows, sea turtles glide through the coral gardens, and hundreds of reef fish dart among the formations. The park is best visited between May and September when the east coast sea is calm and visibility reaches 15–20 metres.
Snorkelling & Coral Reefs
The coral reefs surrounding Pigeon Island are among the most biodiverse in Sri Lanka, with hard and soft coral formations supporting an extraordinary variety of marine life. Snorkellers regularly encounter blacktip reef sharks resting in the shallows — a thrilling but entirely safe experience as these small sharks are non-aggressive. Green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, parrotfish, lionfish, and moray eels are common sightings. The best snorkelling is on the eastern side of the larger island where the coral is densest and the water clearest.
The Islands & Wildlife
The park consists of two islands — the larger Pigeon Island and the smaller Rock Island. Pigeon Island takes its name from the rock pigeon colonies that nest on its cliffs. The island's interior is home to monitor lizards and a variety of seabirds. The beach on the larger island is a perfect spot to rest between snorkelling sessions, with white sand and clear turquoise water. Landing on the islands is permitted with a park ticket, and rangers are stationed on the island to protect the coral from damage.
Getting There & Nilaveli
Pigeon Island is reached by boat from Nilaveli Beach, approximately 3 km north of Trincomalee. The boat journey takes around 15 minutes. Most visitors combine a trip to Pigeon Island with a stay at Nilaveli — one of Sri Lanka's most pristine and uncrowded beaches. Trincomalee town, 15 km south, offers additional accommodation, the famous Koneswaram Temple perched on a clifftop, and the natural hot springs at Kanniya.

Tips for Visiting Pigeon Island
Go Early Morning
Boats depart from 7 AM. Early trips have calmer water, better light for underwater photography, and fewer visitors on the reef.
Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Chemical sunscreens damage coral. Use mineral-based reef-safe sunscreen — or wear a rash vest for UV protection instead.
Don't Fear the Sharks
Blacktip reef sharks are small (under 1.5 m) and completely non-aggressive toward snorkellers. Keep calm and enjoy the encounter.
Bring an Underwater Camera
The coral and marine life are spectacular. A waterproof phone case or GoPro will capture memories that no land photo can match.
Check Sea Conditions
The park can be closed during rough weather. Check with your guesthouse the evening before — conditions change quickly on the east coast.
Respect the Turtles
Sea turtles are protected. Do not chase, touch, or block their path. Observe from a distance and let them approach you naturally.
