Why Pottuvil Point?

Pottuvil Point is the crown jewel of Sri Lanka's east coast surf scene. Located just north of the famous Arugam Bay village, this left-hand point break delivers long, peeling waves that can run for over 200 metres on a solid swell. Unlike the main Arugam Bay right-hander, Pottuvil Point's lefts are less crowded and offer a more raw, adventurous experience. The surrounding landscape — mangrove lagoons, fishing boats, and the ancient Pottuvil town — adds a sense of discovery that keeps surfers coming back season after season.

The Wave: What to Expect

Pottuvil Point breaks over a sand and reef bottom, producing a consistent left-hand wall that suits intermediate to advanced surfers. The wave picks up swell from the south-west monsoon, which wraps around the southern tip of Sri Lanka and arrives on the east coast from May through October. At its best — typically June to September — the point delivers hollow, fast sections followed by long open-face walls ideal for carving. The take-off zone is well-defined, making it easier to read than many reef breaks.

Getting There & Local Scene

Pottuvil Point is a 5–10 minute tuk-tuk ride north from Arugam Bay village. The track to the break passes through mangrove forest and small fishing settlements, giving it a remote feel despite its proximity to A-Bay. A handful of small warungs (food stalls) near the point serve fresh coconuts and rice-and-curry. Board rental and surf lessons are available from shops in Arugam Bay — most can arrange transport to Pottuvil Point as part of a lesson package.

Beyond the Surf

The Pottuvil lagoon, just behind the point, is one of the most biodiverse wetlands on the east coast. Crocodiles, painted storks, and sea eagles are regularly spotted from the shore. Pottuvil town itself — the nearest settlement — has a lively local market and the ancient Muhudu Maha Viharaya temple, a 2,000-year-old Buddhist shrine sitting right on the beach. Combining a morning surf session with a lagoon walk and a temple visit makes for a perfect east coast day.

Insider Tips

Go at dawn

Pottuvil Point is glassy and almost empty at sunrise. Paddle out before 7 am for the best conditions and the fewest people in the water.

Check the tide

The wave works best on a mid to high tide. Low tide exposes the reef and makes the take-off section very shallow — check local tide charts before paddling out.

Lagoon wildlife walk

After your session, walk the lagoon edge towards Pottuvil town. Crocodiles bask on the banks in the morning sun and the birdlife is spectacular year-round.

Negotiate the tuk-tuk

Agree on a return price with your tuk-tuk driver before heading out — a round trip from A-Bay should cost around 500–700 LKR. Many drivers will wait for you.

Visit Muhudu Maha Viharaya

The ancient Buddhist temple on the beach near Pottuvil is one of the most atmospheric heritage sites on the east coast. Visit after surfing for a peaceful contrast.
