Unawatuna's horseshoe bay has long been rated among Asia's finest beaches. Protected by a natural reef, the water stays calm and clear for most of the year — perfect for snorkelling, swimming, and lazy afternoons under a palm. Snorkelling & Diving

The fringing reef just metres from shore shelters an abundance of tropical fish, sea turtles, and colourful corals. Several PADI dive centres on the beach offer guided reef dives, night dives, and open-water courses for beginners. The wreck of the SS Rangoon, sunk in the 19th century, lies in shallow water and is accessible to snorkellers.

Jungle Beach & Hidden Coves

A short hike over the headland brings you to Jungle Beach, a secluded cove accessible only on foot or by boat. The trail winds through dense tropical forest and rewards with a pristine stretch of sand almost entirely free of crowds — a favourite among travellers looking to escape the main bay.

Galle Fort Day Trip

Unawatuna sits just 5 km from the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort, a 17th-century Dutch colonial fortification packed with boutique hotels, galleries, and cafés. The fort's ramparts offer sweeping ocean views at sunset. Most visitors combine a morning at the fort with an afternoon on Unawatuna beach.

Arrive early for sunrise

The beach is almost empty before 7 am — golden light, calm water, and no crowds make for magical morning swims.

Spot sea turtles

Green and hawksbill turtles feed on the reef year-round. Snorkel quietly near the rocks at the bay's eastern end for the best sightings.

Eat at the beach shacks

The small family-run restaurants behind the beach serve the freshest grilled seafood at a fraction of resort prices. Try the devilled prawns.

Take the coastal train

The Colombo–Matara train hugs the coastline for much of the journey — book a window seat on the left side heading south for ocean views.

Check surf conditions

Unawatuna is primarily a swimming beach, but the eastern end picks up small waves suitable for beginner surfers from May to October.

Visit Galle Fort at dusk

The fort's ramparts fill with locals and visitors at sunset — a wonderful atmosphere and the best light for photography.
