Sri Lanka's Tallest Waterfall
Bambarakanda Falls, located in the Badulla District of Sri Lanka's Uva Province, is the island's tallest waterfall at 263 metres. The falls cascade down a sheer rock face in a single dramatic drop, surrounded by pine forest and highland grassland. The area around the falls is a popular trekking destination, with trails that wind through scenic highland terrain with sweeping valley views. The falls are most impressive during and after the rainy season (May–October) when the flow is at its strongest.
The Falls & Trek
The trek to the base of Bambarakanda Falls takes about 45 minutes from the main road, passing through pine forest and grassland. The trail is well-marked and suitable for most fitness levels. At the base, the falls create a fine mist that keeps the surrounding vegetation lush and green year-round. Swimming in the pool at the base is possible and refreshing, though the water is cold.
Pine Forests & Highland Scenery
The landscape around Bambarakanda is dominated by pine plantations established during the colonial era, creating an unusual highland scenery that feels more like Scotland than tropical Sri Lanka. The surrounding hills offer panoramic views of the Uva Basin and the distant mountains of the central highlands. Several viewpoints along the road to the falls offer excellent photography opportunities.
Combining with Ella & Horton Plains
Bambarakanda Falls is ideally located for combining with other highland attractions. Ella is just 30 km away, and Horton Plains National Park is 40 km distant. A 2-day highland itinerary might include the Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak in Ella, followed by Bambarakanda Falls and Horton Plains the next day.

Essential Tips for Bambarakanda
Visit after rain
The falls are most impressive after heavy rain. The May–October wet season produces the most dramatic flow.
Swim at the base
The pool at the base of the falls is clean and refreshing. Bring a swimsuit and a towel.
Best photography
The full height of the falls is best captured from the viewpoint on the main road, not from the base.
Wear good shoes
The trail can be slippery, especially near the base of the falls. Closed-toe shoes with grip are recommended.
Combine with Ella
Bambarakanda is just 30 km from Ella and makes an excellent half-day trip from the town.
Dress in layers
The highland climate can be cool, especially in the morning. A light jacket is useful even in the dry season.
