Little Adam's Peak
Sri Lanka's Favourite Hill Country Village
Ella is a small village in the Badulla District, nestled among rolling tea plantations and dramatic mountain ridges. It rose to fame as a backpacker haven but now attracts travellers of all kinds drawn by its cool climate, stunning scenery, and relaxed pace. The iconic Nine Arch Bridge, the hike up Little Adam's Peak, and the legendary Kandy-to-Ella train journey make it one of Sri Lanka's most rewarding destinations.
The Nine Arch Bridge
Built entirely from brick and stone during the British colonial era (1921), the Nine Arch Bridge is Sri Lanka's most photographed railway viaduct. Set deep in a jungle valley, the bridge is best seen when a blue train passes over it — a sight that draws photographers from around the world. The walk down from Ella town takes about 20 minutes through tea estates.
Little Adam's Peak
The most popular hike from Ella, Little Adam's Peak offers panoramic views of the Ella Gap, surrounding tea plantations, and on clear days, all the way to the coast. The 2-hour round trip is accessible to most fitness levels and passes through working tea estates where you can watch the plucking process. Sunrise hikes are especially rewarding.
The Kandy–Ella Train Journey
Widely regarded as one of the world's most scenic train rides, the journey from Kandy to Ella (or Badulla) winds through the central highlands for 7 hours. The train passes through cloud forests, over viaducts, and alongside waterfalls, with passengers hanging from open doors to take in the views. Book an observation car seat or simply ride in second class for the full experience.
